(ECNS) -- A 19-year-old from Hanzhong, Shaanxi Province in northwest China, who was recently rescued from Myanmar after being deceived into traveling abroad, has safely returned home and received a university admission letter, local media reported.
The student, surnamed Peng, went missing in July after being deceived into traveling to South China's Yunnan Province for a purported summer job, which turned out to be a scam. He was subsequently trafficked into the Wa State region of Myanmar.
According to media outlet Jimu News, Peng has been admitted to a university in China, where he will begin his undergraduate studies in clinical medicine this September.
To protect his privacy and due to other practical considerations, Peng and his family have not disclosed further details to the public. His family expressed gratitude to police departments across several regions, relevant government agencies, the media, and concerned members of the public. "We hope he can now focus on his studies and move forward with his life," they said.
Peng had previously told local officials in Myanmar that he had been recruited online for a supposed livestreaming job after finishing the national college entrance exam. He was taken to Cangyuan County in Yunnan and then trafficked across the border. Upon arrival in an industrial zone in Myanmar's Tangyang area, he was turned away due to his age. He was later rescued by a kind local resident, who helped contact the Wa State Judicial Committee.
On July 19, Wa State authorities confirmed on social media that Peng had been located and rescued following a missing persons alert from Chinese counterparts.
